Traffic and Public Transport Changes During the March 15 Holiday

On the occasion of Hungary’s national holiday on March 15, several events and demonstrations will take place across different locations in Budapest on Sunday. As a result, road closures and changes to public transport services are expected in the city center during the morning and early afternoon hours.

Road closures will affect the Kossuth Lajos Square and Margit Bridge areas in the morning, while from early afternoon restrictions will be introduced along Andrássy Avenue and around Heroes’ Square. The Liberty Bridge (Szabadság Bridge) will also be closed to traffic from noon until 8 p.m.

Due to these closures, several Budapest public transport (BKK) services will operate on modified routes and schedules. Changes will affect, among others, the tram lines 4 and 6 on the Grand Boulevard, the 2, 2B and 23 trams along the Pest riverbank, the 17, 19 and 41 trams on the Buda riverbank, as well as the 47 and 49 trams running along the Small Boulevard. Several bus routes in the city center will also be affected.

The 100E Airport Express will operate only between Liszt Ferenc International Airport and Kálvin Square from early Sunday afternoon.

The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) advises motorists to avoid the city center if possible. The company recommends using rail-based public transport, especially the metro lines, which will run more frequently to accommodate increased passenger demand.

Up-to-date information about public transport changes is available at bkk.hu/nemzetiunnep, while details about road closures can be found on the police.hu website.

On March 15, BKK services will run according to the Sunday and public holiday timetable, although the closures related to the celebrations are expected to significantly affect transportation in the city center.
