The renovation of the section of Thököly Road between Hungária Boulevard and Mexikói Road has been completed, as announced by Mayor Gergely Karácsony. With the end of the works, a long-problematic stretch of road that carries significant daily traffic has been renewed.
This was not simple pothole patching, but a comprehensive reconstruction. This distinction is important because while patching only provides a temporary fix, this type of intervention ensures a more stable and safer road surface in the long term. According to the city leadership, the condition of Budapest’s roads can only be meaningfully improved through such large-scale projects.
The current investment demonstrates the direction in which urban infrastructure development should move. Instead of constant patchwork repairs, long-lasting solutions are needed—ones that not only improve the comfort of road users but are also more cost-effective over time.
At the same time, the mayor emphasized that the city alone cannot finance enough projects of this scale. Long-term improvements require predictable government support and adequate funding. Without this, most areas will continue to rely on pothole repairs, which only address symptoms rather than providing real solutions.
The renewed section of Thököly Road can therefore be seen both as a successful investment and as a signal: the condition of Budapest’s roads will only improve significantly if more comprehensive developments like this are implemented in the future.
