Hungary’s National Day Marked by Rival Political Rallies in Budapest

Hungary’s March 15 national holiday in 2026 took on a strongly political tone this year, alongside the usual official commemorations, as several major political events were held in Budapest just weeks before the parliamentary elections.

Official ceremonies and state programs

As part of the official state commemorations, Budapest hosted flag-raising ceremonies and festive programs honoring the heroes of the 1848–49 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence. One of the central events of the day took place at Kossuth Square, where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delivered a speech.

In his address, the prime minister emphasized the importance of peace and security, and also spoke about the stakes of the upcoming elections. A central message of the speech was that Hungary must maintain stability amid international conflicts.

Mass demonstrations in the capital

This year the national holiday also became the scene of several large political demonstrations. Supporters of the governing parties participated in the Peace March (Békemenet), which moved through the capital, where Viktor Orbán also addressed the crowd.

At the same time, the opposition Tisza Party organized a large-scale march called the “National March.” The demonstration started at Deák Ferenc Square and proceeded along Andrássy Avenue to Heroes’ Square, where Péter Magyar delivered a speech.

Both events attracted large crowds, and estimates of the number of participants varied widely, which is a common occurrence at political demonstrations.

Other parties and events

Throughout the day, several smaller political or civic events also took place in the capital. For example, the Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party organized a program at Liberty Bridge, while the Mi Hazánk Movement held its own commemoration in the city center.

Political messages and election atmosphere

According to international media reports, the March 15 events in 2026 became a major show of political strength ahead of the upcoming elections, with both the government and the opposition seeking to demonstrate their support.

Analysts say both sides could be satisfied with the turnout, as the large crowds indicated that political competition is extremely intense in the run-up to the elections.
