Starting Saturday, temporary traffic restrictions will be in place in Budapest until August 23 due to St. Stephen’s Day events, the police announced on their website on Friday. The closures will mainly affect the embankments, the bridges, Buda Castle, the city center, and the City Park (Városliget).
According to the Budapest Police Headquarters, in addition to partial and temporary closures, no-parking rules will also be enforced at many locations across the city. Owners of vehicles towed for illegal parking can inquire by calling the toll-free number 06-80-180-780.
On August 15, a section of Műegyetem Quay in the 11th District will be closed to vehicle traffic until midnight on the 18th, as well as from the 21st to the 23rd. The Chain Bridge will also be closed until the morning of the 21st. From August 15, pedestrians may not use the Margaret Bridge, and from the 16th to the 21st, the northern sidewalk of the Liberty Bridge will also be off-limits.
From August 15, closures will be in effect on the lower embankments in both Buda and Pest, as well as in Buda Castle; from August 18, the Kós Károly Promenade in the 14th District will also be closed. Between August 18 and 21, the northern and southern sidewalks of the Elisabeth Bridge and its bus lanes will be closed; on the Liberty Bridge, the roadway will be closed on the 18th and the southern sidewalk on the 19th.
From August 19, Gellért Square, Budafoki Road, and the Széchenyi Quay in the 5th District from Kossuth Square to Széchenyi Square will also be affected.
On August 20, St. Stephen’s Square, Széchenyi Square, and several surrounding streets will be closed between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., the Margaret Bridge will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians until 10:30 p.m., and until 11:00 p.m. the Chain Bridge, Elisabeth Bridge, and Liberty Bridge, as well as designated parts of Margaret Island and several riverbank sections, will also be closed.
