The internal medicine and gastroenterology department of the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Hospital faces a critical staff shortage as more than half of its doctors depart simultaneously.
A significant wave of resignations has hit one of Budapest’s largest healthcare institutions. Starting in April, the Internal Medicine Department I of the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Hospital will be left with only five doctors, following the departure of seven specialists. These physicians are not moving to the private sector; instead, they are transferring to other state-run facilities due to extreme workloads and an overwhelming number of on-call shifts.
The department serves a vast area, including the 10th and 17th districts of Budapest. Despite the mass departure, hospital management insists that patient care remains uncompromised and that „specialized gastroenterology services are still guaranteed.” To cover the gap, doctors from smaller internal medicine units will be reassigned to the affected department.
This incident highlights the ongoing systemic pressure on the Hungarian healthcare system, as specialists often have to cover shifts in multiple hospitals simultaneously to prevent a total collapse of services.
