War in Ukraine – Eurostat: the number of Ukrainians residing in the EU with protection status has risen again

In January, 4,303,115, in February, 4,234,595, in March, 4,211,495, and in April, 4,198,490 Ukrainians held temporary protection status in one of the European Union member states. By the end of May, their number again approached 4.3 million, according to a report released by the EU statistical office, Eurostat, on Tuesday.

Due to the war that began on February 24, 2022, the number of Ukrainians fleeing to temporary protection has continued to slightly increase. This status allows them to receive healthcare, work, and enroll their children in public schools, among other benefits, the office said. According to the report, currently, 4,263,195 Ukrainian citizens with temporary protection status live in one of the EU member states. The most temporary protection statuses for Ukrainian refugees have been provided by Germany (1,332,515), Poland (953,255), and the Czech Republic (356,405), based on data received from member states.

Compared to the end of April, the number of beneficiaries increased the most in May in Germany (14,250; 1.1 percent), the Czech Republic (11,000; 3.2 percent), and Romania (3,715; 2.4 percent). The most significant decreases were in France (1,005; 1.6 percent), Poland (675; 0.1 percent), and Latvia (15; 0.03 percent).

Comparing the number of temporary protection recipients to the population of each EU country at the end of May, the highest per thousand rates were in the Czech Republic (32.9), Lithuania (27.2), and Poland (25.9), while the EU average was 9.5 per thousand. Of the beneficiaries, 45.6 percent were women, 32.5 percent were minors under 18 years of age, and 21.9 percent were adult men.

According to the report, since the introduction of temporary protection status, Hungary has provided 36,045 such statuses, including 500 in May, to Ukrainian refugees.
